Phyllostachys arcana was cultivated as a seedling from the flowering cultivar Phyllostachys arcana ‘Luteosulcata.’ In contrast to the parent plant, it lacks the characteristic yellow sulcus (groove between culm nodes) but has retained other features of the species. Phyllostachys arcana often displays a zig-zag pattern on the lower part of its stems, distinct from that of the species and cultivars of Phyllostachys aureosulcata. This bamboo is small to medium-sized, reaching heights between 6 and 8 meters with culm diameter of around 5 cm. Culms are smooth, initially green and later turning to a dark yellow color.
Known for its lush growth and dense clustering, this bamboo variety forms visually appealing groves. With its attractive curved stems, it serves as both a focal point and a functional element in the garden. Due to relatively low branching, it’s suitable for providing privacy from unwanted views and for ornamental living hedges. It boasts excellent cold resistance, easily enduring temperatures well below -20°C. If winter conditions do cause some damage, it typically recovers quickly in spring. Given its aggressive growth, containment of bamboo is highly recommended.
