Phyllostachys aurea, also known as Golden Bamboo, is a commonly used bamboo species with several unique characteristics. This bamboo type is renowned for its elegant appearance, vibrant golden-yellow stems, and highly deformed internodes. Stems start off green or blue-green and, over time, especially in sunny locations, transition to a golden-yellow color. The lower part of the stems often exhibits deformities, creating a thickening where the joints are condensed. In the past, Golden Bamboo was used to craft fishing rods, the thickened part of the deformed stem served as a convenient handle.
Although it doesn’t reach the towering heights of some other bamboo species, it still achieves a respectable height of 8 meters. The stem diameter can eventually exceed 5 cm.
Golden Bamboo is extremely adaptable to various climatic conditions, thriving in both temperate and subtropical regions.
Phyllostachys aurea is quite resistant to cold winters and easily withstands winter conditions in our region, making it suitable for diverse environments. It thrives in well-drained soil and appreciates regular watering during dry summers. Golden Bamboo spreads aggressively and requires root containment, as later intervention is generally challenging and involves more work than regular maintenance.
The branches of Golden Bamboo emerge very low, practically at ground level, which is advantageous for planting living hedges. In cases where a view of visually appealing stems is desired, lower branches can be easily snapped or pruned early in the growth phase to the desired height, creating a canopy. Bamboo can serve as a focal point or as a functional addition to the garden.
