Fargesia dracocephala Rufa bamboo

35,00

Fargesia dracocephala ‘Rufa’ is an exceptionally resilient bamboo which can endure even the coldest winters without significant damage. This is a shorter (3-4m) bamboo variety with slender (1cm) and gracefully arching culms. It remains hardy even during temperatures below -25°C. Rufa is not well-suited for summer heat and drought, so slightly shaded location is preferable in hotter areas; however, it generally thrives well in full sun during the summer in most places. It grows well in all soil types. It responds well to pruning, especially when establishing living hedges and ornamental planters. Unlike more aggressive bamboo species, especially those from the Phyllostachys genus, Rufa doesn’t require rhizome containment as it tends to spread in clumps. If it outgrows its designated space, regular thinning helps to keep it under control.

The stems are slender and are mainly used for creating indoor plants supports or crafting products where thicker stems are unnecessary.

Available bamboos are categorized by their size, age, and pot size.

Fargesia dracocephala Rufa is an excellent choice for those seeking a compact and slightly shorter bamboo variety. It grows in a dense clump of bamboo stems without spreading in all directions, which means it doesn’t require drastic containment. With its dense green foliage and attractive slender stems in a weeping form, you can plant individual plants in the garden or group them together to form a living hedge or screen. In addition to its compact growth, Fargesia Rufa retains its leaves even in the coldest winters, remaining equally attractive throughout all seasons. Unlike many other bamboos, Rufa doesn’t curl its leaves – even during the summer heat. You’ll be impressed by its low maintenance, suitability for creating living boundaries, and its ability to withstand various weather conditions.

Like most bamboos of the Fargesia genus, it prefers cooler summers, which means high temperatures during dry months, especially when planted in pots, might not be the most suitable. However, Rufa withstands low winter temperatures exceptionally  well and easily handles temperatures well below -20°C without significant damage. If it does experiences some damage during winter due to full sun exposure and icy cold winds, it typically fully recovers in spring. Culms reach a diameter of around 1 cm and height between 3 and 4 meters (especially in colder locations). When planting in soil with high clay content and poor drainage, it’s advisable to ensure proper drainage which allows the plant to settle and grow roots properly.

Available bamboos are categorized by their size, age, and pot size.
