Fargesia dracocephala Rufa is an excellent choice for those seeking a compact and slightly shorter bamboo variety. It grows in a dense clump of bamboo stems without spreading in all directions, which means it doesn’t require drastic containment. With its dense green foliage and attractive slender stems in a weeping form, you can plant individual plants in the garden or group them together to form a living hedge or screen. In addition to its compact growth, Fargesia Rufa retains its leaves even in the coldest winters, remaining equally attractive throughout all seasons. Unlike many other bamboos, Rufa doesn’t curl its leaves – even during the summer heat. You’ll be impressed by its low maintenance, suitability for creating living boundaries, and its ability to withstand various weather conditions.
Like most bamboos of the Fargesia genus, it prefers cooler summers, which means high temperatures during dry months, especially when planted in pots, might not be the most suitable. However, Rufa withstands low winter temperatures exceptionally well and easily handles temperatures well below -20°C without significant damage. If it does experiences some damage during winter due to full sun exposure and icy cold winds, it typically fully recovers in spring. Culms reach a diameter of around 1 cm and height between 3 and 4 meters (especially in colder locations). When planting in soil with high clay content and poor drainage, it’s advisable to ensure proper drainage which allows the plant to settle and grow roots properly.
Available bamboos are categorized by their size, age, and pot size.
