Phyllostachys edulis (also known as Phyllostachys pubescens and Moso bamboo) is the largest bamboo that grows in the temperate climate zone, capable of exceeding 20 meters in height and with stem diameters reaching around 20 centimeters. In our region, it may not meet all the conditions to achieve these gigantic dimensions, but it is still a magnificent giant. During extremely severe winters, Moso bamboo may experience freeze damage, but it typically regrows in spring, producing new, healthy shoots.

Phyllostachys edulis is somewhat more sensitive to water stagnation and doesn’t thrive well in pots. It prefers milder winters and well-watered summers. It can thrive in practically all types of soil but performs best in sunny or partially shaded locations.

Due to its exceptionally rapid and aggressive growth, it is crucial to restrict its uncontrolled spread; otherwise, it can quickly overgrow dedicated space. Removal of escaped bamboo can be quite challenging and labor intensive task.
